A green exit sign in a dark room Which way is the way away?

When a fire threatens your business, more than just raw materials, paperwork, equipment, and productivity are on the line. Both business owners and employees alike rely on businesses to remain standing. When production stops, cashflow stops and with it, livelihoods are damaged.

Melted Glass? Aisle 3

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

Liquid melted glass against a dark background Eh, close enough.

Every once in a while we will receive a job that goes above and beyond the threshold of normalcy, at least in regards to specific things like location or happenstance. I personally have seen some pretty cool, fairly unique places due to this job. I have also seen some things that have made me do a double take.

In one instance, I saw what glass does under immense heat. I will never forget it. A grocery store near Riverside experienced a large fire that affected most of the property as well as a dental office next door. The fire ravaged the aisles, destroying most of the stock and leaving ashen carnage in its wake.

One of the aisles happened to be housewares. There was a display of lightbulbs that seemed to have come into close contact with the flames, resulting in a very interesting "warping" effect that made the glass appear to be almost liquid and claw-like. I unfortunately did not have my camera on-hand but if you have ever seen a glass working video, you will sort of have a visual.

If your business (regular of off-kilter) suffers a fire loss, SERVPRO of Walnut is your best bet for getting things back on track. We have the experience and the professional technicians to help make it "Like it never even happened".

Water floods a warehouse Yep, this will require a bit of elbow grease.

Nobody likes to get wet when they are not expecting to. This is especially true when it comes to your business. A flood in an office or a warehouse can mean slowed or entirely stopped production, not to mention the incredibly high costs that are associated with replacing products.
SERVPRO of Walnut understands these frustrations all too well.

Having seen our fair share of water damage in industrial, office building, and warehouse settings, we have learned a thing or two about setting things straight and getting you back to business with minimal pain and suffering.

Water damage can be a real pain in the neck, but rest assured: SERVPRO of Walnut is here for you in the event that your workspace floods. It is what we do best.

Memorial Day Woes

6/1/2022 (Permalink)

A hamburger flies through the air. Holidays with hamburgers are the best.

A fire is just about the worst thing a business owner can have happen. Picture this: the last day of the week arrives. Monday is Memorial Day, so nobody will be back in the office until Tuesday morning. With thoughts of BBQ, swimming pools, and time with family and friends flooding your mind, you close up shop and make your way to your truck.
In the early AM hours of Saturday morning, a tired cross-country truck driver tosses a lit cigarette butt out on to the highway. It gets caught in the wind, rolling into nearby brush. A small ember turns into a modest fire, which travels into a nearby parking lot. This happens to be your parking lot. Seemingly in the blink of an eye, embers have blown their way to your offices roof, catching leaves on fire in the gutters. The entire office is now ablaze, sending thick plumes of smoke into the air and signaling passing drivers to the inferno that has spontaneously appeared. One of them calls the fire department and they respond accordingly; cutting into the roof to drop water on the towering flames. They get the fire out, smoke and steam rising into the summer night.
When you get the phone call about your business being reduced to a soggy pile of wood and ash, two things go through your mind.

1. "Why did it have to be on a holiday weekend?"
2. "I had better call SERVPRO of Walnut."

Our technicians are experts at restoring businesses after a fire. If your office space goes up in flames, make sure that SERVPRO of Walnut is your first call. Oh, and have an extra hamburger for us.

Black Water in Commercial Buildings

6/18/2021 (Permalink)

Commercial warehouse after a flood caused by upstairs bathroom leak If your commercial building has an unexpected water loss call us today (909) 598-8400

Your commercial building can be affected by flooding from several sources. Water damage can include warped flooring and moldy drywall, but one immediate issue caused by flooding is the influx of contaminated water. If your business has recently been damaged by flooding, we can help you understand how this type of water can cause long-term damage and what you can do to mitigate it.

1. It Can Contain Dangerous Chemicals

Environmental experts often call contaminated water that stems from flooding Category 3 or "blackwater." This means the water did not come from a sterile source and may contain various hazardous components, including harsh sewer and lawn chemicals that entered the water during flooding. These chemicals can make the water dangerous to touch, so calling in flood damage and cleanup service is the safest way to remove it.

2. It May Make You Sick

Category 3 water damage can be dangerous in more than one way. For example, standing black water can grow microbes that may cause a variety of health effects. Urine and feces may also be present, even if they're not immediately visible. It's wise to avoid this type of water entirely and wait for professional cleanup services to arrive.

3. Acting Quickly Can Be Essential

Because contaminated water can become more dangerous the longer it sits, it is good to call in a cleanup crew right away. This can be important even if you believe the worst of the damage has already been done. Having the water removed may reduce the chances of long-term issues with your building's affected floors and walls and prevent mold growth, which can be challenging to treat once it takes hold.

Blackwater damage can harm your commercial building in several ways. However, when you know its dangers and how to combat them, you may be able to prevent the worst of the destruction.

If your commercial building has an unexpected water emergency call SERVPRO of Walnut today (909) 598-8400

10 Critical Steps to Recovering your Business after a Fire

6/1/2021 (Permalink)

Hallway in vacant commercial building with smoke and soot damage Vacant commercial unit suffered smoke and soot damage after a vandalism fire.

When you’re recovering from a commercial fire, you need to take control. These 10 steps can help you develop a business fire recovery plan. Knowing what to do before something happens makes it easier to deal with the worst.

1. CALL THE INSURANCE COMPANY

Notify your insurance company immediately. Be ready for that first call with as much information as possible. Cover these important points too.

• Your insurer’s requirements for damage documentation
• Scheduling an adjuster to inspect the property
• Deadlines for proof of loss statements
• Possibility of written extensions and approvals
• Recommendations for a
 Restoration Vendor

2. DISCONNECT ALL UTILITIES

A commercial fire affects utilities lines, wiring and plumbing. Turn off the gas, electricity and water coming into your building. If you have any doubts about safely shutting everything down, contact city services right away.

3. ASSESS STRUCTURAL SAFETY

Fire-fighting efforts soak walls, floors and ceilings creating a dangerous environment. The intense heat of a commercial property fire damages a site’s roof, exterior walls and foundation. Bring in a certified fire damage professional to assess your building’s structural safety inside and out.

4. SECURE THE PROPERTY

Even a small fire at your business leaves the property vulnerable to intruders. Broken windows and doors provide easy entry for vandals. SERVPRO can secure the property by boarding up fire-damaged windows and doors.

5. START THE RECOVERY PROCESS

Once the site is secure, restoration crews can start the cleanup and recovery process. Their initial work addresses potential hazards like damaged wiring and ruptured pipes. They also take care of unstable interior and exterior materials including drywall, ceilings, subflooring and window and door frames.

6. BEGIN ASSESSING YOUR LOSSES

Get the OK from on-site teams before beginning a room-by-room loss assessment. When you’re sure of your personal safety, inspect the entire building. Make note of all fire-damaged equipment, furnishings and inventory.

7. DON’T THROW AWAY ANYTHING

Don’t throw away fire-damaged business equipment. Don’t haul off water-damaged furniture or ruined inventory. Leave everything in place so that your adjuster can see the full extent of your post-fire losses.

8. DON’T ASSUME IT’S ALL A LOSS

Experienced restoration professionals can often save business-related items after a fire. Special techniques can salvage everything from electronics to paper records.

• Customer and vendor records
• Employee payroll records
• Accounting ledgers and checkbooks
• Tax-related paperwork
• Business licenses and permits

9. DOCUMENT AND RECORD EVERYTHING

Your final damage inventory should include lists, photos and videos.

10. BE PATIENT AND COMMUNICATE

The aftermath of a business fire leaves you focused on recovery. Be patient with the process. Stay in close touch with people involved in your business. Restoration might take some time, so let everyone know what to expect.

Commercial Property Tips for Owners

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial Building for Sale Commercial Building

Purchasing a commercial property may be the largest investment that a business will make. In order to protect that investment, regular inspection in the property for potential water leaks, rust and mold should be routinely made. By a maintenance manager or by a professional.

There are four common methods to detect water damage in the commercial properties that owners look out for.

1. Floors
Whether it is wood, tile, concrete, or carpet flooring water will show signs of water damage. For instance, tile and wood will crack, buckle or warp. Concrete will erode or have cracks.

2. Water Stains
Water stains on the floor can be typically found around toilets, sinks, ceilings and walls, are some of the most common signs of water damage. As the drywall gets saturated, paint can lose adhesion.

3. The Outside Perimeter of the Building
Take a look at the exterior of your commercial property. What you want to look for are pools of standing water that can indicate poor drainage. Any of those issues could affect the foundation of the property.

4. Mold
Do not rely solely on sight when your looking for mold since water stagnates, mold and bacteria can grow. Producing a musty, unpleasant smell.

If you do experience any water damage to your commercial property call the professionals at SERVPRO of Walnut (909) 598-8400.

Ways to Keep Your Commercial Property from Fire Damage

7/2/2019 (Permalink)

Save yourself some time with these helpful tips for a fire.

A fire, whether in a commercial or residential property is often the most devastating reality that a property owner will have to oversee. In addition to wreaking havoc on your property, fires can force you to relocate temporarily so you can maintain running your business while the restoration process is completed. However, property owners who access and implement high-quality safety practices can avoid the devastation and deconstruction that results from most commercial or residential property. Below is a brief outline that will provide some learning techniques to protect your property.

  1. Install Automatic Fire Sprinklers:As many authorities know, having an automatic fire sprinkler in your property can reduce the risk of a fire up to 71%. Additionally, sprinklers can up your insurance premium. To keep your sprinkler in excellent condition, be sure that it is not blocked by dirt or paint. Also, be sure to inspect the main control valve regularly so that it is not left off. Finally, be sure that you take the precautions necessary to prevent the pipe from freezing.
  2. Conduct Fire Emergency Training:Each of your employees should undergo Fire Safety Training. The training can help prevent your staff members from being victimized.

Here are a few subjects that should be covered in the emergency training:

  • Hazard Recognition:Keep all combustible chemicals and materials away from heat-generating and electrical equipment.
  • Prevention:Inspect your power sources regularly and don't overload you extension cords and outlets.
  • Response:Teach your employees how to respond when a fire breaks out. Some subjects that should be covered include how to perform an organized evacuation, operate the fire extinguisher, and set the fire alarm.

Be Winter Ready for your Home or Business

5/31/2019 (Permalink)

Our SERVPRO truck ready to handle the winter weather

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business, if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall. This could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should direct away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a destructive effect, that can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawlspace. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.

What's Slumbering in your Air Ducts?

7/31/2017 (Permalink)

Dust, Pet dander and other containment's from everyday living are circulated through your ducts and can decrease the efficiency of your HVAC heating and cooling system causing it to work much harder. Keeping the duct work clean can extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which saves you money.

Duct Cleaning Can:

  1. Remediate bacteria, fungi and mold
  2. Reduce potential for mold growth
  3. Restore peak energy efficiency
  4. Eliminate offensive odors

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, keeping your duct-work clean should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold and irritating dust throughout your building or home. These contaminants from day to day living are sucked into your HVAC system and re-circulated throughout your home over and over. This causes a buildup over time inside the dust-work.

Managing this mold infestation requires the professional skills of our trained and experienced technicians. Because the area is large, there may be more than one source of water feeding the fungus. The organic materials the microbes can grow on many and varied in the theater, Curtains, costumes, and sets are just a few of many items that can support mold colonies.

Ceilings are high in a theater, and the mold up near that leak in the roof may have been growing for some time, unseen because the areas are in darkness or covered. These difficulties will not deter SERVPRO of Walnut crews. The training received by all our mold remediation specialists is through a complete education in the ways of mold and how it spreads and grows. Our project managers will design a plan that finds, contains, and removes all active mold colonies, sometimes requiring that materials that cannot be cleaned be discarded. Our goal will be to bring the microbial activity down to an acceptable level, as it can never be completely eradicated.

If your theater is showing signs of possible mold damage call SERVPRO of Walnut (909) 598-8400.
