There's Only One Company To Call When Disaster Strikes

6/22/2022 (Permalink)

A tree branch rests on a silver car. When we say "any disaster", we mean it.

SERVPRO of Walnut is no stranger to massive losses, like the type that result of a major storm. We helped out in Texas during the big freeze and went to Louisiana when a hurricane ripped a trail of destruction through the central and eastern United States. We do not shy away from hard work, and that is not unique to our location.

Since it's inception, SERVPRO has always represented hard work, great results, professionalism, and of course, courtesy to our customers. With 1,500+ franchises nationwide, it is not difficult to imagine that we have the resources and the manpower to tackle just about any sized disaster.

We helped during Hurricane Katrina. We helped on 9/11/2001. We have seen the carnage that disasters can yield, and we always rise to the occasion. The same can be said for smaller scale losses, though. While we have the ability to show up in droves, we also take your kitchen flood, house fire, or mold infestation just as seriously and with the same respect and integrity you have come to know the SERVPRO brand for.

The Details Matter!

6/22/2022 (Permalink)

Dominoes that say "Success Favors the Prepared" ...and prepared, we are.

SERVPRO of Walnut is one of many franchises across the United States. While we are not unique in that regard, we are unique in regards to our staff, our knowledge, our experience, and our speed. We do not let more than 2 hours pass from the moment you call to the moment we arrive. It is one of our trademark guarantees to better serve you, the customer.

Another great asset that all franchises share are our awesome line of products that allow us to be a world-class restoration brand. Products like SERVPROxide, a powerful cleaning agent that can be used in tandem with our other powerful cleaning products to produce results that are second to none. We also often turn to our surface cleaning product WALL AND ALL quite often, especially when we are working on mold jobs.

Are we completely unique? No, but that should come as a comfort to our customers. Success is only truly successful when it can be replicated, and SERVPRO has replicated it over and over again.

If you experience any type of loss, give SERVPRO of Walnut a call today.

Never Judge a Book By Its Cover

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

A library wall with a very stocked bookshelf Every one is different.

"You should never judge a book by its cover".
Everyone has heard this saying at least once in their respective lives, right? To think you know about someone or something just based off of a glance is totally normal. However, it's been my experience that I am wrong in my presumptions much of the time.

Take, for instance, your average SERVPRO technician. Much of the time, they are in their mid to late 20's, tend to be high-energy, and may appear inexperienced. After all, how much could someone that age know? This is where that old saying starts to break down and fail.

Every time I meet a new technician (I have met my fair share), the old notion of "they are so young!" creeps into my mind. However, 100% of the time, I am quickly shown that age is sometimes just a number and bares little to no impact on their skills. In fact, some of the best and most skilled techs I have met have been under 26 years old.

The inverse can be true, too. Sometimes, you can judge a book by its cover. We employee some older, more seasoned technicians as well! More often than not, these are the guys that make sure our young bucks are up to snuff and knowledgeable enough to represent the SERVPRO of Walnut brand name.

Whether they be a spring chicken or an old dog, SERVPRO of Walnut only brings the best of the best on board.

Texas is the reason

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

A frozen flower is seen against a frozen landscape The weather doesn't follow any rules.

Size definitely matters in many aspects of life. Have you ever tried to fit an entire little league team into a VW Bug? Better yet, have you ever tried fitting three pizzas into one box? If so, kudos to you for being so optimistic. However, these situations tend to not have as dire consequences as some.

Picture this: the year is 2021. Much of Texas has been stricken by a giant storm system that dumped snow and froze crucial elements of civil infrastructure as well as made travel very difficult if not downright impossible in some areas. The event has been dubbed in the restoration industry as “The Texas Freeze” or simply “The Big Freeze” due to its historic and uncharacteristic nature.

SERVPRO dispatched several Disaster Cleanup crews and put out an APB to all the franchises across the country. So many hands were needed, in fact, that new hires were being brought on and trained on the spot in real-time. It was the single largest job that SERVPRO has ever worked on, comparable only to Hurricane Katrina.

How did we pull this off? Simple: we have a massive network of locations that have an open line of communication at all times. Over 1,550, to be exact. With this kind of firepower, there is no job that is too large for SERVPRO.

Never waste time

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

A pocket watch dangles in front of a windswept sidewalk Make your time count!

Time is a valuable thing. It is not only valuable to try and utilize to the best of your ability, but it is also valuable in that time spent can yield wisdom and knowledge. A journeyman electrician and a master electrician’s biggest difference is the time spent on the job and knowledge gained in that time. The same can be said in the restoration business.

Yes, there are many different restoration companies. In fact, at the time of this writing, there are too many to name. Some of the bigger and more established companies (SERVPRO included) can boast many decades of experience. What these companies would have a harder time claiming is the attention to detail and knowledge that SERVPRO can.

For example, anyone can buy bleach. It is one of the most common household chemicals available on the market. What people would have a much harder time finding is SERVPROxide, because only SERVPRO professionals have access to it. What is it? SERVPROxide is a proprietary cleaning agent that we employee in a number of different situations, including fire and mold losses.

Aside from our expansive line of products, we only hire the best of the best because SERVPRO spends not only time but money on their teams. We would never dream of sending an under-trained amateur into your home or business. It’s just not the way we do things.

When you are choosing a company to clean your home or business after a loss, be sure to choose the company that has been around for more than 50 years. Choose SERVPRO.

Ways SERVPRO Helps with Claims

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

Green SERVPRO Logo "Like it never even happened."

Experiencing a disaster, business causes feelings of frustration and stress. Frustration is a common reaction because disasters hinders your normal workday. Stress is also a typical response to emergency situations because there is increased concern for the well-being of employees, as well as the need to work with insurance companies to handle claim services. Fortunately, there are four ways that an emergency response team assists business owners with claims to reduce these stresses.

1. Emergency Disaster Response
Fire, flooding and storms wreak havoc, and the longer the situation is left unattended, the more damage is done. SERVPRO offers a team of professionals with the training and skills to quickly attend to any situation. Our technicians are available 24/7 to clean up after fire, water, mold and more. A fast response to any disaster reduces damage by enabling businesses to restore items rather than replace them.

2. Pretesting
Another way that emergency specialists assist with claim services is by performing pretesting. Trained technicians inspect items before throwing them out, evaluating furniture and belongings to see if they can be restored.

3. Electronic Claims
Business owners and insurance adjusters are busy people, and disasters only add to their amount of work. Fortunately, SERVPRO has a claims information center that enables all parties to see claims electronically. Electronic job files contain important information such as loss info and photos, estimates, pending jobs and completed jobs.

4. Best Practices
Finally, insurance companies want to ensure that a restoration job is handled correctly. SERVPRO outperforms the competition by ensuring that all franchises meet the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration’s certification requirements. Insurance companies and business owners can rest assured that their cleanup and restoration project is done correctly.
Take advantage of the claim services offered by emergency response specialists. The amount of frustration and stress you experience can be decreased by utilizing their expertise.

What is a Dehumidifier?

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

empty white room with a wall cut out due to water damage with 2 green dehus in the room This home suffered water damage and SERVPRO was called to assist with the drying process

When our technicians are onsite at jobs, you might hear them refer to using "Dehu's"... the "Dehu" is the Dehumidifier, "Dehu" for short. is mainly used on mitigation projects that pertain to water or mold damages in residential or commercial spaces.

Many do not realize that there is a science to drying out buildings and homes affected by water losses and the Dehumidifier plays a huge role in that drying process by raising the temperature.

The "Dehu" has drying technology that helps control the humidity and stabilizes the environment which assists with evaporating the water in the air and from materials that are affected by the water.   The Dehu basically sucks up the wet air and spits out dry air which then eventually dries out the location.

The Dehumidifier works best with Air Movers and should be left running for 24 hour periods without interruption.  It's like boiling a pot of water, once turned off, you have to start all over again to get to that boiling point.

Why do we set up containments?

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Office containment set up to separate the area that is not damaged while technician performs demolition Office containment was set up to keep the area that was not damaged clean.

Why placing a Containment is important and if it's really necessary.

Well the answer is Yes!

Containment's are very important and can play a huge role in Fire, Water and Mold Damage Restoration Losses.

A Containment is placed to control the environment, minimize the work space and/or to keep something that can potentially be harmful under control and to avoid cross contamination.  In most cases Containment's are placed to block the affected areas from the unaffected areas which stops the spread of any further contamination.

Containment's are placed by using thick plastic sheeting with the assistance of tension/support poles or wooden frames and strong tape. The Containment's are usually placed around doors, openings, stairwells or even to divide rooms.

It is recommended that no one enters through the Containment's once set up and in place.

Customers can request to leave the containment up, until the reconstruction is done.

SERVPRO sign with quote SERVPRO Logo

We have a motto around SERVPRO of Walnut, it’s one that the entire company across the nation lives by, "Like it never even happened."  What does that mean? Does it mean we can erase the memory of your home being damaged by water or fire? No, we cannot. However, what we can do is be with you every step of the way. When that initial loss happens, it can feel like you are going through a wave of emotions. For some of us, we’ve experienced those emotions because no one is exempt from a disaster happening, so we’ll be able to relate first hand with you. So when we say "Like it never even happened," what we mean is that we will be there from start to finish. From the initial clean up, dry out, debris removal steps to the very end when the last bit of construction is completed.  "Like it never even happened."

Why we wear full Personal Protective Equipment

PPE is also used in crawlspaces, attics, or around a hazardous environment with dust, fumes, smoke or some that pose a biological or chemical threat if exposed and viruses.

Safety of our customers is as important as the safety of our technicians, and they adhere to the highest standards on keeping our customers safe at all times.

How SERVPRO Can Help with Mold in your home or business

5/18/2021 (Permalink)

Mold on brown wall and under baseboard Mold is usually found behind kitchen appliances and under baseboards

Where Can Mold Grow?

After a flood or any kind of water damage, immediate water extraction is critical for preventing mold, but it may not be enough to prevent a mold problem. Although it is not always possible to detect mold with the naked eye, visible mold is usually an indication that mold exists in the following areas:

  • Behind drywall
  • Under floorboards
  • Behind ceiling tile
  • In the air

If the building or home you are considering purchasing has experienced a flood, the chance of mold existing in these areas is very high.

How Can an Inspection Help?
If you have a sound rationale for purchasing a building based upon location, price, and future profits, investing in a mold inspection might make sense. If mold exists, you may find that a mold remediation specialist can contain it to make your intended use for the property feasible and eliminate future problems. On the other hand, if the inspection substantially raises the amount you are willing to invest in the property, you might choose to forfeit its purchase.

How To Prevent Future Mold Growth?
Every commercial property has some degree of mold, and it is impossible to eliminate it; however, this doesn't mean that a building you purchase will always have a mold problem. You can take measures to reduce the humidity levels including, running dehumidifiers, avoiding and repairing leaky pipes, promptly repairing roof damage and cleaning HVAC coils and drip pans. It is also helpful to schedule periodic property walk-throughs to help detect potential problems before they become large issues that are costly to resolve.
When a mold inspection reveals mold in a building you are planning to purchase in the Walnut area, managing it through minor repairs or costly reconstruction can affect your purchase decision.

Safety ALWAYS Comes 1st!

Safety always comes first at SERVPRO of Walnut. A job can only be done correctly if you are prepared for it correctly. Our safety is a priority, as well as keeping our customer safe.

Having the proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is important and always the 1st step at every job. Working in the Restoration Industry has a very high potential risk for injury, it's very important to be prepared at all times and protect yourselves in every way possible.

Our technician is wearing full PPE's on for this mold loss at a Laboratory. When mold is present when cutting into the drywall, the spores can travel and be inhaled. Inhaling mold/dust is not safe, our employees are required to wear masks & protective eye wear when working with mold. When mold is not present, a mask is still important to wear as well as googles, to keep from inhaling debris that can cause irritation to eyes, nose, throat.

We care about our employees and customers health. We always make sure all of our employees have the proper PPE on for each and every job.

SERVPRO of Walnut was extremely busy a year ago. When the pandemic began, non-essential employees stayed home 24/7, as well as kids out of school. Everyone's life changed. SERVPRO was considered an essential employee and we were lucky to continue to work, and assist families and those essential businesses to stay open during water, fire and mold events. SERVPRO introduced our new Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned program and we were constantly assisting essential businesses, medical offices and warehouses on disinfecting their space with COVID-19 spreading and affecting many people. We were always there to help out. Our technicians worked so hard, we couldn't have a better team. We are still keeping busy with local residential locations and local businesses in the area, we noticed a hike in calls due to more people being home with water and fire jobs.

SERVPRO van in front of a home SERVPRO always Here to Help

Have you ever found yourself in a bind, after a fire, water leak? Not sure what's next? Finding the help means finding the right help that adheres to the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification standards.

What Is IICRC?

For nearly 40 decades, this nonprofit has globally become an industry leader for setting standards and certifying technicians. To achieve a mitigation certificate, technicians take specialized classes on standards and techniques and are required to pass an exam. Afterward, they maintain certification through ongoing training. Areas of certification include:

Cleaning – Subspecialties include carpeting, flooring, leather cleaning, masonry, upholstery, rugs, and general cleaning.

Inspection – Technicians are trained to inspect all types of flooring, including wood, marble, laminate, tiles, carpet, and stone.

Restoration – This training focuses on techniques for microbial remediation, structural drying, fire and smoke damage, odor, water damage, commercial drying, and health and safety.

Why Training Matters

The lingering effects of water, smoke and fire damage can cause further problems and create unpleasant environments. When a storm happens or a fire breaks out, you want to fix it and forget it. SERVPRO prides itself on having IICRC certified professionals, as well as provides its own training to ensure every franchise has experts to handle any disaster. Along with learning the best techniques, they are also trained on using innovative equipment to ensure that mold, smoke, water or other damage is eradicated. Our ongoing franchise training means that no matter what you are facing, we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

While some situations may seem like they can be taken care of on their own, some damage to a property can remain hidden. Instead of hoping for the best, call SERVPRO for assistance We are Here to Help.

Choosing the RIGHT Restoration for your Home

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO SERVPRO

Unexpected home damage is always a shock for homeowners. It can be difficult to determine what to do next or how to react in the moment.

That is why, we always recommend that homeowners plan ahead for these types of situations, so if the damage occurs, they’ll know immediately who to call. But how do you know you’re choosing the right restoration company?

There is a lot of information surrounding the restoration industry, so it is important to narrow it down by determining what is actually important. Here are some key points to consider when making your choice:

Their Areas of Expertise

It is not uncommon for home damages to require more than one aspect of restoration. For example, cleaning up fire damage involves ridding the air of toxic particles and water damage often involves restoring structures. SERVPRO of Walnut is certified and experienced in all aspects of damage, making us the forefront leader in making sure all of your needs are met and exceeded, from start to finish.

Their Night and Weekend Availability

Damages have a knack for occurring at the most inconvenient times, so it is important to pick a company that will be there whenever you call. Because we have a 247 emergency line, we are able to guarantee we’ll always be there when you need us.

Their Level of Training

It is important for a company to invest in the training of their technicians to guarantee they will be prepared for any damage situation that arises. The restoration industry has high standards for training, which is what we use as our guideline for all educational materials.

Their Ability to Scale

Because we are a local franchise with a massive network of 1700 other locations in North America alone, SERVPRO of Walnut can scale as needed for larger disasters. This ensures that we can treat a single-home fire with the same level of care as we would a city-wide disaster; providing exceptional service in both cases.

If you have experienced storm damage, we are always here to help! Call (909) 598-8400 so we can address your damages quickly and make it "Like it never even happened."

Dirty Ducs?

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

HVAC HVAC

Boost the efficiency of your HVAC and keep your indoor air quality at its best by having your HVAC and ducts cleaned.

Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout a building or home.

Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may even save money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary.. Calling a professional to inspect your system and ductwork to make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns is a good idea. Regular inspections can save money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and ductwork.

In some circumstances, such as after fire, smoke or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process.

 The professionals at SERVPRO of Walnut use a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing dust and grime. The process is as follows;

  • The process begins using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ductwork to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97% of the particles in the air stream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will be either cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

Mold in your Business?

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

Mold Mold

If your commercial building has experienced any water damage from a burst pipe, storm, or other cause, you might be wondering how long you have until you need to worry about mold starting to grow. You might be surprised at just how quickly mold growth can occur in the right conditions, which is why it so important to call for help from a water restoration company as soon as excess water is discovered. Here is some information on what causes mold to grow and how long it takes for it to begin growing.

Common Causes of Mold Growth

The main thing mold needs to grow is a continued source of moisture. Whether due to high humidity levels or standing water in your building, wet areas can eventually lead to mold growth. Common ways moisture enters buildings and causes mold to grow includes:

  • Roof leaks and improper ventilation
  • Excess humidity or moisture in bathrooms
  • Water damage from faucet leaks or pipe bursts
  • Flooding from rain or outdoor water sources
  • Sitting puddles and spills
  • Improper cleaning of wood and laminate flooring

How Long for Mold to Grow

Given enough moisture to live on, mold can grow as quickly as 24 to 48 hours. This means that if a pipe does burst in your building or a storm causes flooding, you need to start thinking about mold prevention right away. If possible, turn off the source of the water and do what you can to dry the area. Don’t wait to call in the restoration company to help address all water damage that has occurred to your building, including areas that are hard to see such as inside drywall or underneath carpets and flooring.
While dealing with excess water in your commercial building is stressful enough, dealing with mold growth makes the situation even worse. Always act quickly to prevent more damage from occurring.

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

A landslide begins to cover some homes and buildings.

Landslides have occurred in almost every state and can cause significant damage. Due to the recent catastrophic mudslides/ Landslides. Having some knowledge on what to do before or during can help your family greatly. The American Red Cross offers great steps you can take. Here are a few.

Before: What should I do if I live in an area at risk from landslides?

  • Learn about local emergency response and evacuation plans.
  • Talk to everyone in your household about what to do if a landslide occurs.
  • Create and practice an evacuation plan for your family and your business.
  • Assemble and maintain an emergency preparedness kit.
  • Become familiar with the land around where you live and work so that you understand your risk in different situations.
  • Watch the patterns of a storm water drainage on slopes near your home, especially where runoff water converges.

During: What should I do if a landslide is occurring or likely to occur?

  • If you suspect immediate danger, evacuate immediately. Inform affected neighbors if you can, and contact your public works, fire or police department.
  • Listen for unusual sounds that might indicate moving debris, such as trees cracking or boulders knocking together.
  • If you are near a stream or channel, be alert for any sudden increase or decrease in water flow and notice whether the water changes from clear to muddy. Such changes may mean there is debris flow activity upstream so be prepared to move quickly.
  • Be especially alert when driving- watch for collapsed pavement, mud, fallen rocks and other indications of possible debris flow.
  • If you are ordered or decide to evacuate, take your animals with you.

After: What should I do after a landslide?

  • Stay away from the slide area. There may be danger of additional slides.
  • Check for injured and trapped persons near the slide, without entering the direct slide areas. Direct rescuers to their locations.
  • Help a neighbor who may require special assistance-infants, elderly people, and people with disabilities. Elderly people and people with disabilities may require additional assistance. People who care for them or who have large families may need additional assistance in emergency situations.
  • Listen to local radio or television stations for the latest emergency information.
  • Watch for flooding, which may occur after a landslide or debris flow. Floods sometimes follow landslides and debris flows because they may both be started by the same event.

Understanding Different Types of Water

5/3/2019 (Permalink)

Water begins to floor this residents home.

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup. There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water sources; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other containment's to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals. When you have a water damage, don't leave your property to chance.

Damage from Clean Water:

  • Shut off the water source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
  • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribution panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
  • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive.
  • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors as they may cause staining.
  • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove  water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water:

  • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items. Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
  • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
  • Do not use household fans to dry the structure; air flow could spread contaminates.
  • Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

Call SERVPRO of Walnut (909 598-8400). Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive. We have the right equipment to restore your property!

Do You Know How an HVAC System Works?

5/1/2019 (Permalink)

A SERVPRO technician explains to a home-owner how he can successfully clean her air ducts.

How an HVAC operates:

ServiceChampions' website explains the process. Here's what they have to say:

  1. The furnace utilizes natural gas or oil to heat the air. Within the furnace is a heat exchanger, which is the part of the furnace responsible for heating up the air to the right temperature. You’ll typically find the furnace in the attic, basement, or a specially designed closet space.
  2. The air conditioner cools the air and is found outside of the house. It uses electricity and coolant liquid to reduce the temperature of the air, while sending hot air outside and cold air inside.
  3. Ductwork is the transit system for hot and cold air throughout the home. It moves it throughout the interior of your home.
  4. The thermostat acts as the brain of your system. It can turn your system on and off, control the temperature and also operate any other special features that you have installed alongside your system.

In addition to fire, water, and mold cleanup, SERVPRO also offers to clean your air ducts. We know it can become dangerous when unwanted particles consume the air. That's why SERVPRO has the right special equipment to destroy all dangerous particles and suck them out.  Many customers are left satisfied with the outcome of SERVPRO's work!
