How to Prevent Fires During the Windy Season

Fire blazes inside a brick fireplace. Use these safety tips to secure your fireplace from damage.

During the chilly season, those of us with a fireplace may prefer to have it running, keeping our homes warm and cozy. However, this chilly season can also bring high winds. It’s important to keep in mind safety tips when using our fireplace in windy weather.

Step 1: Heat the flue before you begin lighting a fire by lighting newspaper and holding it up to the chimney for a few seconds. This will start making the flue work faster and it also prevents smoke buildup. The heat from the newspaper will help open the flue.

Step 2: Keep the doors to the fireplace closed to prevent any excess smoke that could blow back down into the chimney and into your home.

Step 3: Use a chimney cap and screw it into place.

Taking these necessary precautions can end up saving you money and prevent fires from occurring in or outside your home.
